Welcome to this week’s “how do I grad school?” video! Today we talk about preparing for graduate seminars, and remember, this is especially geared toward students who have just started their graduate career!
We talk about preparation in two senses, the first, how should I behave during a graduate seminar? This covers things like (1) what to do if I talk too much, and how to identify this, (2) what to do if I interrupt someone, and (3) what to do if I don’t talk enough?
Second, we talk about how to bring useful commentary and questions about the readings. This covers, for the purposes of class discussion, (1) how do I prepare each reading individually?, and (2) how do I prepare the readings as a group?
Please note that YouTube will auto-generate captions, and generally does a great job with my voice. If they have not generated and you need them, check back in 24 hours.
When I have time, I will also be uploading a ‘bonus time’ video, about some more *S P E C I F I C* things to look for in each reading.
One thing I meant to say, but did not, is that in graduate seminars you should always give credit to your colleagues for contributing ideas to a discussion that you are building off of!
So, with that out of the way, I hope people find this useful!
